Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

Remind, previously known as Remind101, is a communication tool that allows teachers to reach parents and students instantly. Remind allows you to send messages to any device. Messages can be sent to your entire class or individual subscribers. Parents and students can instantly receive messages that appear in the form of a text to their mobile devices. The phone numbers of subscribers are not revealed.
Instead, a subscriber username is listed. Teachers can print out PDF instructions that contains the number parents and students need to text to the account creator's class name in order to start receiving messages. Parents and students can unsubscribe at any time. Remind is a free site that takes seconds to create. It is ad free and can be used as a one way messaging system or as a chat depending on the creator's purpose. 50% of public schools use this service! Secondary aged students with mobile devices would be an appropriate audience for Remind.

Educational Uses of Site

Field trip coming up? Test tomorrow? Last minute change in a scheduled event? Fun project or class image you'd like to share? Communication with parents and students is just a message away. Your image or message will instantly be received on their mobile device. Interested in having your students discuss a topic they've been learning in class at home? A message such as, "Ask your child to sing the money song they learned today!" strengthens the home and school connection.

Review of Site

I started using Remind two years ago and have found it to be extremely convenient! Prior to Remind, I would post classroom pictures to my teacher website. I would notify parents in a paper newsletter that new pictures had been uploaded. They would then have to access the district homepage and follow a series of steps before arriving at my page. Now, a photograph with text appears on their phone! The information is coming to them in an easily accessible manner. I do still maintain a website with pertinent information regarding curriculum, procedures and scheduling. However, I use Remind to keep parents informed and involved in their child's learning. Each year, the majority of my parents subscribe to Remind making this Web 2.0 tool one I will no longer teach without!
